Perennial Ryegrass for overseeding in Winter

Key Points

  • Increased wear recovery
  • Winter active
  • Low temperature germination
  • Rapid establishment
  • Contains endophyte

Characteristics and areas of use

Arena I turf perennial ryegrass is an all-purpose, highly winter
active, ‘Mediterranean-type’ turf grass that is ideally suited
to winter sports fields, or areas subject to high wear. Arena I
also has the unique ability to germinate quickly under low
temperatures down to 5°C. It establishes rapidly and reliably,
especially in cooler conditions.
Arena I has a mid-green colour which helps to mask a Poa
annua invasion and it has a proven history of excellent
performance in sports fields.

Breeding history

Arena I was bred by utilising Mediterranean germplasm crossed with climatically adapted American material. The high winter activity of the Mediterranean germplasm means Arena I is able to continue growing in the colder months when other grasses have stopped. It has a high endophyte level, giving it resistance to many insects and pests. The inclusion of American genetics also gives the cultivar excellent summer performance.

Sowing rate and maintenance

Arena I turf ryegrass can be sown at 30-50 g/m²  (3-5kg/100m²). Use the higher seeding rate for faster establishment. In new sports fields and winter over-seeded couchgrass, it should be sown at 4-5kg/100m².

Suitable For: Shady Areas
